When Cassidy Phelan first arrived at Colorado Mesa University from Las Vegas, Nevada, she focused on two main objectives: excelling both on the golf course and in the classroom. Now a senior marketing major in CMU’s Davis School of Business, Phelan’s dedication to her sport and academics has been recognized through the Davis School of Business Scholar-Athlete Scholarship.
The scholarship was established by businessman and CMU trustee Ron Davis, the namesake of the Davis School of Business. The scholarship supports student-athletes who maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher while pursuing a business degree. This initiative ensures that academically driven student-athletes can focus on their dual passions without financial burden. Recipients are selected based on recommendations from coaches and faculty who recognize their character, achievements and dedication.
For Phelan, receiving the scholarship was a moment of validation for her years of hard work.
“When I found out I was selected, it meant so much to me,” Phelan said. “It was recognition for my golf achievements, character, academics and everything I’ve worked for. It was an amazing feeling to see my hard work paying off. If you just keep pushing forward, the sky’s the limit.”
Four student-athletes receive this scholarship annually. Alongside Phelan, the latest recipients include women’s volleyball player Sierra Hunt, men’s soccer player Manuel Ponce Casas and women’s soccer player Abby Fotheringham. Together, these student-athletes embody the balance of academic excellence and athletic commitment that the scholarship seeks to reward.
A standout moment for Phelan was meeting with and thanking Ron Davis, entrepreneur, philanthropist and generous supporter of Colorado Mesa University, during an exclusive dinner for scholarship recipients at Devil’s Kitchen.
“It was such a special evening,” Phelan recalled. “Being able to speak with Mr. Davis, express my gratitude personally, and share that moment with the other recipients was truly incredible. He is such an inspiring person. He’s accomplished so much, and hearing his insights was motivating.”
Looking ahead, Phelan is set to graduate with her bachelor’s degree in marketing this May. She plans to continue her education by pursuing an MBA online through CMU’s Davis School of Business. Phelan also accepted a new role as an assistant golf coach in Las Vegas, mentoring the next generation of young golfers.
As she prepares for this next chapter, Phelan hopes her journey inspires others hoping to reach their goals.
“Hard work pays off,” said Phelan. “Sometimes, you wonder if anyone notices all the effort you’re putting in. But I want people to know — it’s worth it. If you have a dream and commit to working for it daily, it will happen.”
